18-Year-Old Jimelle Levon Creates the Perfect Dress for His Prom Date
Nowadays, the perfect prom date won’t just hand over a store-bought corsage. If you’re lucky enough, he just might make a dress for you.
Eighteen-year-old Jimelle Levon is inspiring millions with his story. The teen is a designer from Columbus, Ohio, and at a young age, he was ready to use his talent to the fullest and turn it into a business opportunity. You see, Levon did not exactly have it all while growing up. When he was in fifth grade, he and his mother were living in a homeless shelter, so money was always tight with his family.
“Me and my mother lived in a shelter before when I was in fifth grade,” Jimelle told WCMH. “From there on, once I hit sixth grade, I was always a hard worker, either shoveling the snow or anything to gain money because I didn’t want to be in the predicament anymore.”
Instead of relying solely on his mom, Levon decided to work hard on his own. The following year, he had converted his small bedroom into a makeshift office, aptly naming it Sewing Lab.

When Levon decided to take his friend Autumn to prom this year, he made sure that the two of them walk into the hall in style. He took inspiration from the iconic gold dress worn by Vanessa Bell in the film Coming to America and created something that would place even the most seasoned designers to shame. To create the dress for Autumn, Levon cut each gold flower by hand and sewed them into the sheer body-con dress as his prom date wore it. As for his outfit, Levon embellished his gold tux with the same cutouts.
But while Levon made Autumn’s dresses pro bono, he is actually selling his elaborate designs for $300 to $450. Each dress is specially handcrafted and made for his customers, totally embodying the word “couture.” The designs range from his signature sequined mermaid dresses to ruffled masterpieces. Levon has made such good money from his past time that he was finally able to quit his other job to focus on his booming business.
The future certainly looks bright for Jimelle Levon. He now has officially named his clothing brand KoldKut and launched a site for people to visit and do business with him. On his Web site, he writes this:
“I’ve been designing for four years now. I started off painting shoes and distressing jean shorts, then expanded from there.
“I have never taken any classes or been taught how to sew. I am a self-taught artist.”
