A grilled cheese sandwich is a pair of bread layered with cheese, grilled in a panini press, and served with extra sauce. It’s a favorite in America, if not the entire world, because of its savory flavor and cheap price. But would you believe that a New York–based restaurant sells them for a whopping $214?
Serendipity 3’s Quintessential Grilled Cheese Is World’s Most Expensive Sandwich
The Quintessential Grilled Cheese looks just like your typical-looking toasted sandwich, except it’s overly priced—sold for $214. Unsurprisingly, it’s been named the world’s most expensive sandwich. It’s too expensive that one serving could already buy two dozens of grilled cheese at a local food truck.

The high-priced toastie is especially made by creative chef Joe Calderon of Serendipity 3, the legendary restaurant based in New York City. If you want to try it yourself, know that guests are required to order at least 48 hours in advance so they can prepare the food.
To make it, Chef Joe uses only the most expensive and exclusive ingredients in the world: two pieces of French Pullman bread baked with Dom Pérignon champagne and Caciocavallo Podolico, a type of cheese made from the milk of a rare breed of cow that can only be found in Southern Italy. The bread slices are toasted with white special truffle butter and edged with edible 24-karat gold. Then it is served with a creamy South African lobster-tomato dipping relish. All these ingredients are still imported from other countries, which is why the Quintessential Grilled Cheese has a record-breaking cost.
But the most expensive sandwich isn’t the first and only Guinness World Record set by Serendipity 3. It holds a few more, including the largest wedding cake, most expensive hamburger, largest cup of hot chocolate, and most expensive hot dog. In June 2018, their LUXE Milkshake, sold for $100, also bagged the world’s most expensive milkshake.
Besides that, the restaurant also makes two of the priciest sweet eats ever made. In 2004, the thousand-dollar Golden Opulence Sundae was declared the most expensive dessert in the world. It wasn’t until 2007 that Serendipity 3 broke its own record by creating a more expensive dessert—the Frrrozen Haute Chocolate ice cream sundae, which costs $25,000.
Up until now, the diner still holds the world records. Their menu is truly meant for the wealthy ones, but their door is still open for people who’d love to try a lavish meal sometimes. If you do so, be sure to leave nothing on your plate—it’s too expensive to waste away!
