We humans attempt to take ownership of nature’s highest peaks. Climbers claim that they “conquered” the summit, an ultimate show of bravado.

The mountains, the Alps, the Rockies are all quiet giants that sit still while being surrounded by unpredictable environment of weather, terrain, and animals, and it is a grandiose claim to say that a person has conquered them—a claim that is full or irony.

Mountains are seen as strong and unmoving entities, and because of their proximity to the heavens, mountains are considered sacred in many cultures.
