See the Rare ‘Full Cold Moon’ Set to Light Up the Skies This Christmas

Christmas day is a time for gift giving, and this time, it looks like the sky is giving mankind a gift of its own—a full moon. The last time a full moon lit up the sky on Christmas day was way back in 1977. Most of today’s younger generation hadn’t been around that time.

So don’t miss this phenomenon as the next full moon on Christmas day is set to occur in 2034. “That’s a long time to wait, so make sure to look up to the skies on Christmas Day,” NASA states in their Web site.

However, you’ll need to set your alarm on the wee hours of the morning as it is scheduled to reach its peak at 6:11 a.m. (eastern time).

Although full moons happen regularly, a full moon on December is considered a supernatural phenomenon. It is known as the full cold moon. As the name implies, the temperatures will go lower than normal on that date.

This sort of news will be great for parts of the world where the natural phenomenon can be viewed clearly. It will give the moon ample time to bask in its glory. The full moon is a first after the winter solstice, which symbolizes longer nights and shorter days.

A moon’s cycle follows a 29.5-day period before it becomes full. Each month calls for an uneven division of the cycle, so 2016’s December full moon is scheduled to fall on the 14th of the month.

So maybe with the cooler weather coming and nature’s gift painted on the sky, we can use this as an opportunity to spend time with our families and loved ones. We can sit by the fireplace while waiting for Santa Claus and his reindeer to roam the cities giving gifts to the kindhearted. We know he’ll have enough light from the moon to use this year.
