Get to know the world’s smallest deer species, the Mapudungan or pudus as widely known. They are subspecies of South American deer found in Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Columbia and Peru.
Pudus are solitary animals that do not interact with others except for their mate. They are classified as endangered animals according to IUCN Red List. They are usually 32 to 44 centimeters tall and they have small hooves and short tails.
Earlier last month, a new pudu was born at the Queens Zoo in New York City. It weights 1 pound and measures 6 by 6 inches. The newest addition to the pudu family in the Queens Zoo is currently nursing.
