As the popular saying goes, “No Man is an Island”. Socialization is an integral part of a person’s survival. The ties that are built from these interactions form a significant impact on one’s life. The connections made from socialization has a widespread effect on a person’s overall well being. So whether it is meeting up with friends or catching up with some loved ones, getting in touch with other people is considered as a healthy way of living.

However, one of the biggest challenges that most people face in terms of socializing with other people, especially with people they’ve never met before in a different setting is how to strike up a good conversation. This does not come as a surprise as not all individuals are born with not only the person but also the confidence to even say a word of “hello.”

So, whether it is at a park or at a small gathering, there are simple ways that you can conquer your fear of interaction.

I. Socializing 101

1.) Figure out the kind of people whom you are comfortable with.

One of the best ways that can rid you of the jitters when talking to someone is by figuring out who you want to interact with. The advantage of doing so will narrow your choices and will make interaction easier for you. From there, with a few more conversations you will slowly be introduced a wider circle of individuals.

2.)  Take it one day at a time.

One of the biggest mistakes that some individuals commit is by hopping on the social train in one go. When it comes to interacting, you do not want to start off as someone who is loud. Another way that will allow your interaction to be more meaningful with someone is to start some daily goals then gradually increase it to weekly propelling yourself in the right direction.

3.) Deflate your ego.

Remember that first impressions do create a lasting effect on the people you meet. The best way for you to make a good impression is to be sincere and thoughtful. Do not come out as egotistic as this will turn off a lot of people. The worst thing that can happen to you is to get off on the wrong foot with anyone, especially with strangers.

4.) Get out of your house.

If you want to get to know other people, the first perfect step that you should do is to get out of your own house. You cannot meet other people while being stuck in your own couch while binge watching on Netflix. Even if you are unsure as to where you are headed off to or who you will meeting that day, one positive thing that you can get from stepping out your house is experiencing new things and even meeting new people in the process.

5.) Do not be afraid to approach people.

The second step to beginning your interaction with someone is by approaching them. Do not worry if you find yourself formulating the words you want to say. Remember that socializing is about exchanging energy. It does not require one to have a script prepared. THe perfect way to approach people is to come by naturally and sincerely.

Do not worry about being ignored or rejected, there are other people whom you can talk to as well.

II. Lessons Learned from Talking with a Stranger

Our parents have told us that talking to strangers is a big no-no.

However, interacting and socializing with strangers may just become a lifesaver for you. Although we should be wary of what strangers can do to you at the spur of the moment, you would surprised at the kind of lessons and facts you can learn from them.

Here are just some of the things that strangers wish to tell you about themselves when you are giving them a wary eye.

1.) People don’t bite.

You would be surprised that the snobbish person sitting next to you is open to a conversation. They are just waiting for you or for someone to open up a conversation.

2.) Never fear rejection.

The fear of rejection is one of the leading causes why some people do not bother talking with somebody else. As other people put it, never take rejection personally. Move on. There are plenty of other people to talk to.

3.) Authenticity is the silver bullet.

An honest individuality is the most magnetic of human qualities. However, there are boundaries that need to be set. Go for compliments as a conversation starter. Remember that sincerity is something that you should be showing.

4.) The people around you aren’t watching.

This is a common feeling that every individual feels. Just remember that other people have other business to attend to. So do not ever think that they’re watching you or even criticizing you.
