Since vehicles were invented, man has been trying to come up with ways to go faster and faster. Here are the fastest cars over every decade since the 1880s.

1880-1889 | Benz Motorwagen | 10 mph

Benz Motorwagen (1880-1899)

At a speed of 10 mph, a horse-drawn carriage could actually move quicker.

1890-1899 | Stanley Runabout | 35 mph

Stanley Runabout (1890-1899)

The steam powered Stanley Runabout was fast enough to zoom past the slowpokes in their one-horse carriages.

1900-1909 | Mercedes-Simplex 60HP | 73 mph

Mercedes-Simplex 60HP (1900-1909)

This was originally meant to be a race car. It’s one of the earliest Mercedes production cars.
