Five Body Modifications that Are Way Over the Top
There are really people who will not think twice about getting themselves pierced or tattooed. Some say it is their form of expression. Others say it is art.
Those with tattoos sometimes say they had parts of their bodies inked to honor someone, while those with piercings believe it is their way of beautifying themselves further. Whatever their reasons may be, a lot of these pierced and tattooed people never went beyond having more than ten tattoos or piercings.
This is not the case with the five people featured in this article though. In fact, the modifications they have had done on their bodies are so extreme, they totally went over the top and ended up looking more alien than human. Check out their stories below.
Maria Jose Cristerna, “Vampire Woman”
The former Mexican lawyer turned disc jockey had titanium horns injected into her forehead, some dental work and a whole lot of piercings and tattoos to finish her body modification. Although she might look quite horrifying and is even touted as the Vampire Woman, she is actually very active in helping eliminate violence among women and children, having been a victim of abuse herself.

Dennis Avner, “Catman”
Also known as Stalking, Avner underwent 14 surgical procedures to look the way he does. Before he died in 2012, he got the world record for the “most permanent transformations to look like an animal”.
It was during the 1980s when Avner started his body modifications. In interviews, he said that he decided to change his physical appearance to follow an ancient Wyandot tradition, which calls for people to make alterations to their bodies, so they will become similar to their totems. Aside from extensive tattooing, other modifications done on his body include septum relocation to flatten the nose, facial subdermal implants, surgical hairline alteration, and the bifurcation of his upper lip, which gave it the cat-like split in the middle.
Julia Gnuse, “The Illustrated Lady”
Ninety-five of Gnuse’s body and face is covered in tattoos. She now holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s most tattooed woman.
Gnuse started getting tattoos when she developed porphyria during his mid 30s. This condition is where the skin gets blistered when exposed to sunlight. To cover her scars, she turned to tattoos.
There are a variety of themes to Gnuse’s tattoos and these include a self portrait, her favorite actors, and her favorite cartoons. Known as “The Illustrated Lady”, she has appeared on the TV show Ripley’s Believe It or Not and also had a small role in the Pink music video of Aerosmith.
Elaine Davidson, “Most Pierced Woman”
According to the Guinness World Records, Davidson is the world’s “Most Pierced Woman”. In May of 2000, she already had 462 piercings, with 192 of them just on her face. In March 2012, this number has gone up to more than 9,000. She has 500 external and internal piercings in her genitalia, which has the most number of piercings compared to any other part of her body.
