Born Shorter Than a Ruler …See 12-Year-Old Stand Tall against Odds

Children are all born special, but some of them require more care than others. For Kenadie Jourdin-Bromley of Ontario, Canada, it was her condition that made her needy of the attention from the people around her.

When Kenadie was born, she weighed only 2.5 lbs., and she was shorter than a regular ruler because she was just 28 cm at the time. She was even nicknamed Thumbelina by the nurses who attended to her.

Kenadie was diagnosed with primordial dwarfism at just 8 months old, a rare form of dwarfism affecting about 100 people in the world. It’s a condition that could ruin its victims’ lives, but for Kenadie, she never let it bring her down.

Currently, Kenadie is as light as a 2-year-old, and she stands at less than 3 feet. Sadly, she continues to live at risk with her fragile bones and a possibility of developing aneurysm.

Primordial dwarfism does not have any known treatment at present. But the complications include respiratory problems and low immune system, making the patient susceptible to infection and delayed mental development.

When Kenadie was born, her parents were warned by doctors that she wouldn’t live for long because of her susceptibility to brain damage. “We baptized her right away because we were told that we should just bring her home to die,” said her mother, Brianne, in an interview.

But Kenadie proved to be a miracle maker as much as she was a fighter. She defied the odds even if the medical world was not on her side.

Kenadie still has to face the struggles that come with her condition. She has difficulty learning in school, her bones are still fragile, and she is notably smaller than children her age. But those are nothing compared to Kenadie’s resilient spirit. She continues to go through every day with optimism and pride.

“She’s kindhearted, she is loving, and wants to share everything with everyone. She is feisty, determined, and independent,” Brianne adds about her daughter.

Kenadie teaches us an important life lesson: the courage to overcome struggles will come from within yourself. We all just need courage and love to overcome them.
