The powerful voice coming from such a young girl caught judge Chantal Janzen in disbelief. After the performance, he asked, “Are you really nine years old? This is incredible”.
Willighagen later revealed that she had not had any singing lessons, but was self taught, using tutorials on YouTube. She said, “My brother Vincent plays violin, and I also wanted to do something. So, I thought I’m going to sing. And, then I heard opera songs, which I found very beautiful and that’s when I started singing”.
The judges were so amazed by her that she was granted a “golden ticket”. This means she advances to the competition’s live show.
The video of her performance was then uploaded to YouTube and became an instant hit, having been viewed by over 20 million viewers all across the globe.
On December 28, 2013, during the finals of the talent show, Willighagen won with her interpretation of Nessun dorma, an aria for tenor from the opera Turandot. Her fame helped her gather more than 50% of the votes from the TV viewers.
Last year, she recorded her self-titled debut album. It contains ten tracks, including those songs she performed in the competition. It was released in The Netherlands on March 28. After two weeks, it already reached a gold status, which means that it has already sold 10,000 copies.
Aside from entertaining people with her angelic voice, Willighagen also supports her own charity project using half of the revenue she makes. She helps build playgrounds for poor children. Last year, she opened her first ever playground in Ikageng, South Africa, the country where her mother was born.
