Here are four spooky companions of Santa that might just send a chill down your chimney.
1. Krampus: The Terrifying Goat-Demon
Hailing from Alpine regions, Krampus is probably the most famous (and fearsome) of Santa’s dark companions. Known for his goat-like horns, shaggy fur, and long tongue, Krampus comes to town to punish naughty children, often with a bundle of birch sticks or a rusty chain. In some legends, Krampus takes particularly bad kids away to his lair. Traditionally, Krampus accompanies Saint Nicholas on December 5th, known as Krampusnacht, when he prowls the streets, sometimes in parades, to remind kids to be good—or else!
2. Belsnickel: The Ragged Enforcer
A mysterious figure from German folklore, Belsnickel is often portrayed as a grumpy, rugged man dressed in furs, with a bag of treats in one hand and a bundle of sticks in the other. Unlike Santa, who rewards all good children, Belsnickel demands proof of good behavior on the spot. He quizzes children on their manners and behavior, doling out treats if they pass and minor punishment if they don’t. Belsnickel’s grim look and stern manner make him a slightly intimidating figure even as he brings a bit of holiday cheer.
3. Frau Perchta: The Vengeful Christmas Witch
A figure from Austrian and Bavarian folklore, Frau Perchta, or the “Christmas Witch,” isn’t exactly Santa’s helper—she’s more of a holiday enforcer. Known for her two sides (a beautiful face when pleased, a hag-like visage when angered), Frau Perchta rewards well-behaved children and punishes the lazy. Her punishments, according to old tales, can be as harsh as filling the bellies of wrongdoers with rocks and straw. Scary and severe, Frau Perchta is a winter legend whose tale remains a chilling reminder to be on your best behavior during the holidays.
4. The Yule Lads: Mischievous Troll Brothers
In Iceland, the Yule Lads are a group of 13 troll-like brothers who visit children in the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. Far from jolly, these Lads each have their own mischievous personalities, and their names reflect their behavior. From Spoon-Licker to Door-Slammer, each Lad plays pranks and leaves surprises (or trouble) for children. Originally, the Yule Lads were much scarier than they are today, with each brother embodying a trait designed to frighten children into behaving. Despite their current playful reputation, the idea of 13 mischievous trolls roaming around your house can still be a bit eerie!
