The glass-winged butterfly , also known as the Greta oto, is a brush-footed butterfly known for its transparent tissue between the veins of its wings that looks like a glass as it lacks the colored scales found in other butterflies. This particular insect belongs to the subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, subtribe Godyridina.
When Greta otos mature to their full size, they exhibit a number of fascinating behaviors such as long migrations and lekking (gathering of males for competitive mating displays). Their translucent wings can reach a span of 5.6 to 6.1 cm (2.2 to 2.4 in).
Glass-winged butterflies also have a Spanish name, which is espejitos. They can be directly translated as “little mirrors.”
